Post Office Suspends Some US Mail Shipments

The Bermuda Post Office has temporarily suspended “mail shipments to the United States containing goods now subject to U.S. Customs Import Duty.”

A Government spokesperson said, “Effective Friday, August 29, 2025, the Bermuda Post Office joins countries including the UK, Canada, India, France, Spain, and those from the Caribbean in temporarily suspending mail shipments to the United States containing goods now subject to U.S. Customs Import Duty.

“This action follows a recent Executive Order issued by the U.S. Government, which removed the duty-free ‘de minimis’ exemption that previously allowed packages valued at $800 or less to enter the U.S. without import duties.

“As a result, all packages sent to the United States are now subject to Customs import duties, with only limited exceptions. These exceptions include:

  • Documents and letters
  • Bona fide personal gifts valued at $100 or less

“Postal operators worldwide are working to adapt to these new requirements. U.S. Customs has not finalised guidance on how tariffs will be assessed or collected, and systems for processing these charges are still being developed.

“The Bermuda Post Office has introduced this suspension as a temporary precaution to protect customers from delays, returns, or unexpected costs. We will continue to monitor developments closely and restore full service as soon as possible.

“We regret any inconvenience this may cause our customers and encourage the public to stay informed through official government notices.”
