Carrier considering scrapping flights for ferry

The Isle of Man Post Office is working with Royal Mail to review the implications of removing the dedicated aircraft that brings letters and parcels to the Island.

The mail carrier announced it’s considering scrapping daily delivery flights to Jersey and the Island, and sending it by ferry instead.

A consultation has opened on the proposed changes to the postal schemes – also included in the document is a proposed change to the definition of due date for the delivery of mail to the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man as a result of changes to fly mail.

The statement in full says:

“Royal Mail have commenced customer consultation on proposed changes to their Postal Schemes which set out the key terms on which they provide the Universal Service.  Included within the consultation is a proposed change to the definition of “Due Date” for the delivery of mail to the Channel Islands and Isle of Man as a result of changes to arrangements to fly mail between these locations and the UK. Royal Mail’s overall change of delivery times is due to come into effect on 3rd August 2023, not the removal of the aircraft at this time.

Isle of Man Post Office have begun working with Royal Mail to review the implications of removing the dedicated aircraft that brings letters and parcels to the Island. This would provide the opportunity to jointly reduce costs whilst demonstrating a commitment to minimising the impact on the environment. These discussions are in the very early stages and a full understanding of the benefits would need to be achieved. This would result in a two day service for sending and receiving mail to and from the Island. IOMPO is currently seeking the views of businesses using our services and reviewing the responses from its recent residential and business customer surveys.”
