Postal vote deadline approaches – Black Country Radio

People who live in Dudley borough are being reminded that the deadline to request a postal vote for the forthcoming local elections is 5pm on 21 April.

Residents will be heading to the polls on 7 May to vote for their local councillors and those who already have a postal vote do not need to apply again.

The easiest way to apply for a postal vote is online at gov.uk.

The rules around returning postal votes were updated by the government two years ago to toughen up on electoral fraud.

All postal votes must now be returned to Dudley Council by Royal Mail. If postal votes are hand-delivered, then a form must be completed by the person handing them in.

The postal vote handing-in point is at The Elections Office, Dudley Council House, Priory Road, Dudley. Any postal votes not returned in this way will not be counted.

People who wish to use postal voting must also be registered to vote. The deadline to register to vote, if not already registered is 23:59 on 20 April.

Balvinder Heran, chief executive of Dudley Council, said: “Making sure your voice is heard at election time matters and choosing a postal vote is a quick and easy way to take part if you can’t make it to a polling station.

“If you prefer to vote by post, please apply as early as you can so you don’t miss out.  The deadline to apply is 5pm on 21 April, and the application only takes a few minutes.

“If you intend to vote in person, remember you must bring an approved form of photo ID — such as a passport, driving licence or certain travel passes. Anyone who doesn’t have one of the accepted forms of ID can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate.

“And if you choose to vote by post, you won’t need to show any ID.”
