Postal worker’s ‘disgusting’ act after finding woman, 72, in snow

Distressing footage has shown the moment a postal worker appeared to leave an elderly woman on the ground after she asked him to help her up.

The Royal Mail employee was captured on a doorbell camera telling 72-year-old Patricia Stewart he was “too knackered” to help her while making a delivery in Bainsford, a small village in Scotland, on Thursday (local time).

Ms Stewart had slipped on ice and hurt her head outside her home, but when the postman approached, he looked down at her and is heard saying, “I can’t help you pal”, before walking away.

Fortunately the grandmother of two wasn’t seriously injured in the fall, but her family were left outraged at the postal worker’s behaviour.

Her 36-year-old niece, Sheryl Harkins, said another worker from delivery service Hermes arrived a short time later and called for help from neighbours.

If the Hermes worker had not helped her aunt, Ms Stewart could have been stuck in the snow for another three hours until Ms Harkins was due to check on her.

“It was the coldest night in the UK for 26 years and he left my aunt lying on the ground. It just goes against everything, you wouldn’t treat a dog like that,” Ms Harkins said.

“I can’t accept this – it’s no way for someone to treat another human being.”

Ms Harkins described the postie’s act as “unbelievable”, addressing the matter in a post to Facebook where she called on people to spread the word.

“I honestly don’t have the words for how disgusting this is, for a human being to treat another human being in this manner. Words fail me,” part of her post read.

A manager for the mail service visited Ms Stewart following the incident to apologise for what unfolded.

“Royal Mail expect the highest standards of behaviour from our people while out on deliveries and collections at all times. We regularly remind our postmen and postwomen of the important role they play in their local communities,” a spokesperson said.

“We were very sorry to learn about this incident, and for the distress this incident has caused. We are in touch with the customer concerned and will be investigating this incident.”
