The suspension of 11 postal workers at the Prenton Delivery Office has caused widespread disruption of postal services in Prenton and Oxton since July. The suspensions came as a result of a dispute involving the workers having cups of tea and coffee at two pubs on the Wirral during their break. The suspensions have led to mail not arriving and people missing hospital appointments.
Six postal workers were dismissed on August 11, while one received a penalty and the outcome of another is unknown. Three workers who were suspended have been reinstated. It has also been reported that several postal workers who were not involved in the original suspension have resigned due to the situation.
Royal Mail, in response, stated that any incidents where the behavior of employees falls below expected standards are thoroughly investigated. The suspensions were related to activities at the Caernarvon Castle in Oxton and the Swan Hotel in Prenton.
The decision to suspend the postal workers has been heavily criticized on social media, and Birkenhead’s MP Mick Whitley and Oxton councillor Stuart Kelly have both called for the suspended staff to be reinstated. Residents have noticed delays in receiving mail, with some waiting weeks for important items. Royal Mail has apologized for the delays and stated that efforts are being made to improve service levels, including additional recruitment and the addition of agency staff.
Despite these efforts, residents continue to experience problems with their mail. Many have expressed support and appreciation for their local postal workers, who have gone above and beyond their duties, especially during the pandemic. The suspension of the workers has caused frustration among residents who believe it to be an overreaction and emphasize the importance of a proper postal service in their communities.
Royal Mail has assured residents that missed mail will be prioritized and delivered the following day. They are hopeful that further progress in service levels will be seen in the coming months.
