A postman who works for the Royal Mail was left scratching his head when, while working his rounds, he stumbled upon a road with bizarre markings on it that “just don’t make sense”.
A postman was baffled while making his rounds and spotting road markings that don’t “make sense” at all. Sim Lewis is a postman for Royal Mail. While working in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, he came across a road he quickly dubbed “Penny Farthing Lane” in reference to the narrow early bicycle famed for its giant front wheel.
This isn’t the first time the postman has visited the baffling road, which is set up in a way that’s left countless people confused. Taking to TikTok, the postman filmed himself on the street and said: “Guys, what’s going on; I had to come back here today because you lot were going crazy in the comments yesterday.” He added: “This just [doesn’t] make sense.”
He then flipped the screen to show the long road, which has white parking bay lines drawn on both sides. This would allow cars to park on either side of the road, leaving the central section much too narrow for any cars to get through.
If the road was filled with parked cars, which are permitted to park on either side, only pedestrians or cyclists would be able to fit down it.
Sim continued: “So I’m back at Penny Farthing Lane,” before pointing to a parking sign with detailed timings listed to show when parking is permitted. The sign states parking is for “permit holders only” and lists Monday to Friday, 10am until 11am, and 4pm until 5pm as designated times.
Sim confirmed this was “the only information” he could see, before pointing to a similar sign on the opposite side of the street. Both signs had arrows pointing down the road.
The postman then raised another issue that has left him dumbfounded. He said: “I don’t know why it’s got arrows… so it’s only one-way, but I noticed a couple comments about one thing that didn’t make sense at all.
“That’s the fact that everywhere where there’s a dropped kerb, the space is just the same, it continues. There’s no gap, so someone could just park in your driveway and justify it as it’s a parking space.”
There are no breaks in the parking lines drawn on the road, suggesting Sim is correct and driveways could indeed be blocked by parked cars without breaking the rules. He added: “This is the worst bit of permission, or whatever you want to call it, I’ve ever seen in my life.”
In the comments section, fellow TikTok users were keen to share their thoughts. One person joked: “I think someone from the council was having a bad day that day”.
Another said: “Can you tag that area’s local council to ask what the hell is going on cause this can’t be right surely”. A third said: “I need you to come back when people have parked on both sides!” And another quipped: “This was definitely done on a Friday at 1pm when they were clocking off at 2.”
Someone else referenced roads in their local area and explained: “They have some streets where you park one side in the morning and the other in the afternoon. The empty side is where most commuter traffic is, so it makes sense. Are the hours different in the signs?”
And someone else added: “We need to be knocking on doors and seeing what the neighbours think.”
A spokesperson for North Herts Council said: “Souberie Avenue’s layout is similar to other roads in the area. Parking across a dropped kerb is an offence and our Civil Enforcement Officers can issue Penalty Charge Notices.
“If vehicles block the road by parking opposite each other, that’s considered an obstruction enforceable by the police. Continuous bay markings help avoid ambiguity around dropped kerbs, and the arrow on signage simply shows where restrictions change. We encourage drivers to park considerately to maintain access and keep roads clear for everyone.”
