Prices of First-Class Stamps Set to Increase

Martin Lewis, the founder of MoneySavingExpert.com, is advising people in the UK to stock up on first-class stamps before the price hike on October 2nd. The cost of first-class stamps for standard-sized letters will increase by 14 percent, from £1.10 to £1.25. For large letters, the price will go up by 22 percent, from £1.60 to £1.95.

According to Royal Mail, the price increases are due to rising cost pressures and the universal service obligation, which requires the delivery of letters to all UK addresses six days a week. Lewis suggests stocking up on stamps now, even if it’s just for future Christmas cards, as this can help save money in the long run.

In addition to first-class stamps, the cost of Royal Mail’s “Signed For” and “Special Delivery Guaranteed” services will also increase from October 2nd. The Parcelforce “Worldwide Next Day” and “Two Day UK” services will also be affected.

It is worth noting that second-class stamps for standard letters will remain the same at 75p, although there will be a 35 percent increase for large letters, going from £1.15 to £1.55. Lewis recommends using second-class stamps where possible to save money on postage.

Another important change to be aware of is that non-barcoded stamps, featuring a profile of the Queen’s head, are no longer valid for postage. However, individuals can exchange these stamps for new barcoded versions for free through Royal Mail’s “Swap Out” scheme.

Stocking up on first-class stamps before the price increase can be a cost-effective strategy, especially for those who frequently send mail. Additionally, considering alternative postage options, such as second-class stamps, can also help save money on postage fees.
