Prince Harry always sparred with royals over ‘airing dirty laundry’ | Royal | News

Experts on a royal podcast have discussed the “rare occasion” the Royal Family has decided “to go to court”, explaining that the royals usually “avoid it like the plague”.

Richard Eden, the Daily Mail’s diary editor spoke on the podcast, Palace Confidential. He said: “To take on the government was always a big challenge. The Royal Family has hated legal action in the past.”

Referencing the tell-all memoir, Spare, He added: “One of his [Prince Harry’s] big disagreements in the past in his family, was over legal action, and they would always caution him because you’re washing your dirty laundry in public…”

Prince Harry recently lost his High Court challenge against the government over his security protection when visiting the UK.

He had attempted to overturn a ruling that saw his security status downgraded after he stopped being a “working royal” in 2020.

The High Court judge, Sir Peter Lane, rejected Harry’s case and found “there has not been any unlawfulness in reaching the decision” to revise his security, adding: “Any departure from policy was justified. The decision was not irrational. The decision was not marred by procedural unfairness.”

At a hearing in December, Harry’s lawyers told the court that he was “singled out” and treated “less favourably” in the decision to change the level of his taxpayer-funded personal security.

His lawyers added that Harry believes his children cannot “feel at home” in the UK if it is “not possible to keep them safe” there.

The judgement also revealed that the late Queen Elizabeth wanted Harry and Meghan’s security to carry on, despite the announcement that they were leaving as working royals.

It comes as Harry is set to revisit the UK in May for a service for the Invictus Games, which comes just months after he lost the High Court battle. It is not known if Meghan and his two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will be joining him.

The UK Government has recently made a bid of £26m to host the games in Birmingham in 2027. This year marks the ten-year anniversary of the Invictus Games, which see wounded, injured and sick servicemen and women take part in multiple sports and events.

The games are expected to see the full support of the royal family, including Prince William and King Charles, despite the ongoing strained relationship between the Sussexes and their relatives.

A source close to the project added: “Harry has indicated that he is comfortable coming back for a British-based Invictus Games and we understand that the Games have always had the support of the rest of the Royal Family.”
