Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are making headlines with a significant statement from their Archewell Foundation, as they issue an urgent call to action ahead of an important journey.
The foundation has shared an appeal, coinciding with the commencement of Black History Month, encouraging the public to celebrate and educate themselves about influential leaders, activists, and pioneers who have driven societal progression.
This notable appeal comes just as Prince Harry is scheduled to arrive in Canada for the upcoming Invictus Games, set to begin in Vancouver and Whistler on Saturday. In line with Black History Month, which is observed in February across the US and Canada, Archewell’s latest online post spotlights resources for those eager to engage further and make a difference.
Their message states: “At The Archewell Foundation, we celebrate the rich culture and contributions of those who have come before us throughout history. As we mark Black History Month, we encourage everyone to learn and reflect on the contributions of leaders, activists, and changemakers who have inspired progress.”
They add, “Taking the time to appreciate stories, art, history, and culture not only honors the communities that have built these spaces but also contributes to our collective wellbeing. We as a team have compiled the below list of resources and spaces to engage with both this month and always.”
Readers are directed to a host of resources including the California African American Museum in Los Angeles, the Museum of the African Diaspora in San Francisco, the African American Museum in Dallas and the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington DC. This comes as the Invictus Games, an event for ill and injured serving and former military personnel, commences with a star-studded opening ceremony featuring Katy Perry and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, reports the Mirror.
The Duke of Sussex is anticipated to be accompanied by his wife, Meghan Markle, at the games. However, his strained relations with his Royal kin, particularly his father, King Charles, and brother, Prince William, mean they won’t be present to lend their support.
Nevertheless, some Royal backing is on the cards, as it’s been confirmed that Prince Joachim of Denmark and his wife, Princess Marie, will attend the Games. Joachim, the younger sibling of King Frederik of Denmark, last met Harry in 2017 during a visit to a military training centre in Copenhagen.
Interestingly, Joachim has also experienced familial tensions within his own Royal circle, mirroring Harry’s situation.
In 2022, Joachim’s mother, the former Queen Margrethe, made the decision to revoke the prince and princess titles of his children. As a result, Nikolai, Felix, Henrik, and Athena are now styled as counts or countesses, no longer bearing the title of His/Her Royal Highness.
In the meantime, Joachim and Marie have bid farewell to Denmark and set up home in Washington DC, USA.
