Prince Harry chokes up at awards as he talks about becoming a father

An emotional Prince Harry became choked up, while talking about becoming a father with Meghan Markle, as he gave a speech at the WellChild awards on Tuesday night.

The Duke of Sussex, 35, took to the stage at the event, which was streamed live on the awards Facebook page, to talk about how he knew at last year’s event that his wife Meghan was pregnant.

However as he talked about it he choked back tears and had to stop his speech, with host Gaby Roslin stepping in to pat him on the back, before the crowd cheered at him.

He started his speech with how it had been over a decade since he first started to attend the awards, and went on to say: ‘They never fail to inspire me – but this year it resonates in a different way because now I’m a father. Last year when my wife and I attended we knew that we were expecting our first child, no one else knew, but we did.’

At this point Harry seemed moved to tears as he stopped his speech and Gaby came to his aid.

Meghan, 38, later joined him on stage and looked glamorous as she wore the £1185 camel coat by Sentaler, draped over her fitted green wool dress by P.A.R.O.S.H. which she wore at her engagement announcement in 2017.

When Harry first took to the stage he announced the winners and congratulated them as they came to collect their awards.

After he choked up he went on to say about last years ceremony: ‘I remember squeezing Meghan’s hand so tight during the awards and both of us thinking what it would be like to be parents one day and more so would it would be like to protect and help our child should they be born with immediate challenges or become unwell over time.

‘And now talking to all of you as parent pulls at my heart strings, in a way I never could have understood, until I had a child of my own. No parent wants to hear that there child will suffer, that they will face extraordinary challenges – that will effect them throughout their lives.’

‘After meeting all the WellChild kids and parents over the years you have managed to give us a sense of optimism, of hope and of strength that no professional, no best selling book or advice could ever give us – so thank you for being you.’
