The Royal Family have come together to share Instagram posts to celebrate St Patrick’s Day today/

Official accounts belonging to the Queen, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge all marked the occasion, offering followers a moment of normality in otherwise extraordinary circumstances caused by the coronavirus pandemic. 

The Royal Family account shared a photo of the Queen inspecting the Irish Guards, of which she is Commander-in-Chief, at Windsor Castle in 2009. The Clarence House account posted an image of Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall on a 2014 visit to Northern Ireland.

Meanwhile the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have marked St Patrick’s Day with an Instagram post celebrating the work of the Irish Guards.

Prince William, 37, who has been Colonel of the Irish Guards since 2011, praised the troops for their ‘loyalty and grit’ on a ‘tough operations’. 

William and Kate, 38, traditionally celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a parade in London but the event has been cancelled this year because the majority of the regiment are on deployment overseas.

To highlight the troops’ work, the royal couple shared a series of photos showing how they will be spending the day on duty in Iraq and South Sudan. 

The caption reads: ‘Number 1 Company is currently deployed in South Sudan for four months on Operation Trenton, providing security to the Royal Engineers undertaking construction projects as part of the mission there, including teaching basic skills that empower the locals and will help them continue to improve their lives long after the deployment finishes.

‘Meanwhile in Iraq the remainder (and vast majority of the Battalion) of the Micks are deployed on Operation Shader. They are currently on a six-month tour focused on training security forces across multiple locations in Iraq and further north in the Kurdish Region.

‘A truly diverse Regiment, the Irish Guards draws from soldiers all over the British Isles, Ireland and across the Commonwealth. As the Regiment’s motto challenges, “Quis Separabit’ — ‘Who Shall Separate Us?”‘

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge typically mark St Patrick’s Day with an event at Cavalry Barracks in Hounslow, London, where Kate hands out shamrocks to officers and guardsmen of 1st Battalion the Irish Guards.

However the couple are keeping a low profile as the royal family reacts to the worsening coronavirus crisis.  

Several royal engagements have been cancelled or postponed, including several scheduled to be carried out by the Queen, 93. 

The Earl of Wessex became the latest member of the royal family to cancel his engagements.
