In a move that’s clearly a break from tradition, Prince William, 42, has reportedly decided to hire his own legal team instead of sticking with the firm his father, King Charles, has used for years, Harbottle & Lewis and its partner, Gerrard Tyrrell.
A source told Richard Eden of The Daily Mail, “William wanted to strike out on his own. He did not want to continue using his father’s lawyers. It’s as simple as that. He wants to be his own man.”
The Prince of Wales is said to have hired Mishcon de Reya, the firm that represented Princess Diana when she went through her divorce from then Prince Charles in 1996.
Another person close to William reportedly noted, “William wants to do things differently from his father and wants to be seen to do them differently.”

While the move is a bit surprising given William’s close relationship with his father and the royal family in general, it does make sense for him to want to separate himself to a degree as he comes into his own in anticipation of becoming king.
He’s fully embraced his role as a leading member of the royal family, and taking a bold step like this would hint that he wants to establish his own way of doing things as time goes on. Perhaps this is a sign that bigger changes are coming to the monarchy once William is crowned king? We certainly wouldn’t doubt it.
