Princess Anne gives Furness visit the Royal seal of approval

BARROW’S South Lakes Birth Centre was given the Royal seal of approval during a visit from Princess Anne.

Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal paid a special visit to Furness General Hospital as part of her role as Patron to The Royal College of Midwives (RCM).

Princess Anne met with midwifery staff at the £12million state-of-the-art unit along with Lord-Lieutenant for Cumbria, Claire Hensman; Kathryn Gutteridge the RCM President; Gill Walton the RCM chief executive, as well as local stakeholders and senior leaders of the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust (UHMBT).

Sue Smith OBE, executive chief nurse and deputy chief executive, UHMBT, said: “It really was a great honour to welcome HRH The Princess Royal to the South Lakes Birth Centre.

“We are so proud of our facilities and our staff, and are thrilled to be one of only a small number of maternity units across the UK to be recognised by such a prestigious visit.

“It is a great opportunity for us to highlight the excellent care being provided by our staff to local mums and families. and the truly fantastic things that happen at the South Lakes Birth Centre every single day.”

HRH The Princess Royal also met with volunteers from the Save the Children charity shop in Ulverston.

Princess Anne became the Patron of Save the Children in 2016 after serving as their President since 1970.

She was greeted by crowds of people who lined the streets in Ulverston before being given a tour of the shop and stopping to speak to volunteers. She also chatted to Ulverston residents before leaving.

Shop manager Margaret Aisbitt said: “It’s been a very exciting day for everyone at the shop.

“Princess Anne was most relaxed throughout her visit and was very interested in what we’ve been doing.”

Mayor of Ulverston Sharon Webster said: “It was absolutely fantastic. What a wonderful day for the town.

“It was so lovely to see the crowds here to welcome the Princess Royal.”
