Princess Diana and Meghan Markle holiday hotel packages

Two American hotels are offering holiday packages this a royal touch this season, with one inspired by Princess Diana’s trip to Chicago in 1996 and another including a stay in the same high-end suite where Meghan Markle held her baby shower.

In honor of season four of The Crown on Netflix, The Drake Hotel in Chicago is letting visitors book an overnight package to experience the hotel — and tea and dinner — as the late People’s Princess did 24 years ago.

Meanwhile, The Mark Hotel in Manhattan is welcoming the rich to its $175,000 Penthouse Holiday Spectacular experience, which includes a feast by a Michelin-starred chef, a private Nutcracker performance, and a stay in the penthouse.

The Mark, a five-star Upper East Side hotel, was famously the spot where Serena Williams and Amal Clooney hosted a baby shower for Meghan Markle here in February 2019.

Those ready to splash out this holiday season can stay in the very 10,000-square-foot, $75,000-per-night penthouse where they partied, which boasts five bedrooms, six bathrooms, five fireplaces, a 2,500-square-foot rooftop terrace that overlooks Central Park, two powder rooms, two wet bars, a dining room, a conservatory, and a living room that can be ‘transformed into a full-size Grand Ballroom.’

The Penthouse Holiday Spectacular experience, which Town & Country says costs $175,000, also includes lots of luxurious amenities.

Among them is a private skating rink on the 2,500 square foot terrace overlooking Central Park, family photographs shot by fashion photographer Alexei Hay, and a private shopping excursion to Bergdorf Goodman after the department store closes.

For entertainment, there is a performance by a Juilliard-trained pianist, and a private rendition of The Nutcracker.

More amenities include a private hot chocolate stand by Laduree, a private viewing of an unreleased blockbuster movie (with Jean-Georges Vongerichten popcorn, candy, and s’mores), round trip airport transfers by car or helicopter, and a Holiday Play Room from FAO Schwartz.

For food, a four-course holiday feast will be provided by Jean-Georges Vongerichten, with Cristal Champagne and Imperial Gold Osetra Caviar.

And, naturally, a private butler, a nanny, a fitness instructor, and spa services are available, in addition to a visit from Santa.

Meanwhile, in celebration of the fourth season of The Crown, The Drake, a Hilton hotel in Chicago, is resurrecting some of its Princess Diana-themed promotions.

In addition to royal teas, cocktails, and meals, the hotel is also giving guests the opportunity to stay in the same room that Princess Diana once slept in back in June of 1996.

A year before her death, she visited Chicago for three days at the invitation of Northwestern University’s then-President Henry Bienen (the same school, incidentally, that Meghan would attend just a few years later).

‘I love Chicago,’ she told reporters while leaving at the end of her visit. ‘It’s been wonderful.’

At The Drake, she stayed in the presidential suite, which as customized for her visit and equipped with a Lifecycle exercise bike and mineral water.

According to the hotel, the room has been left exactly as it was then, with the addition of photos of Diana from her trip. It has also since been renamed the Princess Diana suite.

Guests can book the room at any time, but this holiday season, they are offering a special ‘Crowning a Lady’ package that allows guests to copy some of Diana’s other experiences.

According to Insider, the package includes a stationary bike and mineral water in the room, just as Diana had.

There will also be her favorite flower (forget-me-nots), a photo book of her favorite band (Abba), and her favorite perfume (Quelques Fleurs by Houbigant Paris).

Princess Diana also had tea at the Palm Court, just as guests who book the package can do — and can enjoy the exact tea she chose, Rose Pouchong.

For dinner, they can eat the same three-course dinner she had: fresh salad, king salmon, and a cinnamon biscotti soufflé.

Finally, they can see her signature in the hotel’s autograph book.

The whole package is available for a minimum of two nights, starting at $32,000, and can be booked through December 15.
