Princess Eugenie pays heartwarming birthday tribute to mother Sarah Ferguson as royal turns 65

Princess Eugenie has shared a sweet new photo of her son August with her mother Sarah Ferguson as she paid tribute to the Duchess of York’s 65th birthday.

Eugenie, the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, marked her mother’s milestone birthday with a sweet Instagram post comprising several photos of her mother, known affectionately as Fergie, over the years.

The carousel opened with a new picture of the duchess with Eugenie’s son August, three.

In another snap, Sarah was posed with Eugenie and her older daughter Beatrice, who recently announced she was pregnant with her second child.

Eugenie, 34, captioned her post: ‘Happy birthday to my beautiful mumma. So proud of the Grannie you are, the mum you are and the woman you are.

‘You’re an inspiration and our endless chats bring me so much happiness and incredible support,’ the mother-of-two wrote.

Royal fans wished Fergie in the comments section, with one person writing: ‘Happy birthday to her, what a wonderful role model she is.’

Another Instagram user added: ‘Happy birthday!!! I meet her once she was so sweet!!!’

A third comment read: ‘This is why you endured the trials and tribulations of life so that you could have those happy moments with your grandchildren and your sweet grandchildren. And there are more to come.’

The duchess has endured serious health challenges over the past year, with two back-to-back cancer diagnoses.

Last June, a spokesperson for Fergie confirmed she underwent a mastectomy after she was diagnosed with breast cancer following a routine mammogram.

Less than a year later, Sarah was diagnosed with an aggressive form of skin cancer following the removal of a mole while ‘undergoing reconstructive surgery following her mastectomy’, a spokesperson for the duchess said.

Fortunately, doctors told Sarah there had been no spread of the skin cancer, MailOnline exclusively revealed in March.

A friend of the duchess said the news was a ‘huge relief for Sarah and the entire family’, adding: ‘You can expect to see her banging the drum for the public health message and urging people not to miss mammograms or delay getting moles checked.’

In what has been a tumultuous year for the royals, both King Charles and Princess Catherine of Wales were diagnosed with cancer earlier this year.

After Kate first confirmed her diagnosis in March, adding she was undergoing preventative chemotherapy, Sarah expressed her admiration for the mother-of-three in speaking out about the disease.

‘I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family and everyone is praying for the best outcome,’ Sarah wrote in an Instagram post at the time.

‘As someone who has faced their own battles with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness.’

While Kate has since confirmed she has completed her chemotherapy treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer, King Charles’ treatment for the unspecified cancer is ongoing.

Sarah said she was ‘so moved’ by Kate’s video announcing the end of her chemotherapy, during an appearance on ITV’s This Morning earlier this month.

The duchess described the footage as ‘just incredible’ and added: ‘I think that’s extraordinary, what’s she doing.’

Much to the relief of royal fans, Kate said she had finished her chemotherapy course in a heartfelt video in September, in which she spoke about her cancer journey as footage played of the Waleses and their children enjoying time together outdoors.

The duchess told This Morning presenters Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard: ‘The video that the princess did was just incredible. I was so moved. It was beautiful.’

Asked by Shephard how Kate was doing, Sarah replied: ‘She’s just showing the world what it is to really look after yourself and self love in order to help others.

‘I think that’s extraordinary, what she’s doing.’

The duchess also described how the King had empathy with other cancer patients.

‘I love when the King went to the Cancer Research UK (in April) and actually sat on the sofa,’ she said.

‘And of course, it’s coming from a place of empathy, because he does understand, and… yesterday, the first time when I was sitting there with someone, it’s not just ‘I understand’ – patronising. It’s ‘I know’.’

The Duke of York’s ex-wife toured the headquarters of the Prevent Breast Cancer charity, of which she is the new patron, in Wythenshawe, Manchester, last week.

She also visited the set of Coronation Street with soap star Sally Dynevor and pulled a pint in the Rovers Return.

Shephard teased the duchess about her skills as a barmaid, saying it might have been the ‘worst pint’ he had ever seen, adding: ‘Want a little beer with that head?’

The duchess laughed and said: ‘I think I’ve convinced the director to give me a cameo part so I’m going to practise my pint pulling.’

Asked about her own health, Sarah quipped: ‘Bet Lynch, eat your heart out’ – a nod to Coronation Street’s much-loved, no-nonsense former landlady, who was renowned for her glamorous, trademark leopard-print clothing.

The duchess has taken part in the programme before, guest-editing an episode last November and telling one caller during a phone-in to spice up her marriage by getting some ‘lovely saucy underwear’.

Sarah resumed her agony aunt role in a segment called ‘Dial a Duchess’ on last  Thursday’s episode.

She spoke to caller Amanda who asked for advice about how to build confidence with her husband after a mastectomy and as she prepares for reconstructive surgery.

The duchess, recommending a candlelit dinner, said: ‘We need to pep up the romance between you and your husband because that will give you confidence.’

She added: ‘Get to the shops, get a lovely new dress, get some new underwear and then just own it.’

She answered a message from Irene about how to get back on the dating scene in her 50s, recommending she join a salsa class to ‘swivel the hips’.

‘Put on the high heel shoes and flick those skirts and get out there,’ the duchess added, before also suggesting she climb a mountain and meet a ‘sexy mountaineer’.
