Punter fuming after bartender leaves sweary note on receipt following basic request | UK | News

A mortified customer has divided the internet after sharing a rather rude retort on their receipt.

The punter had requested ice cubes in their wine – but it was much to the disgust of the waiter who branded them ‘f**king bogans’, which is Aussie slang for someone who is uncouth or unsophisticated.

The Cornish Arms, Brunswick, Victoria, has now come under fire after the note was shared to Reddit.

But the pub says that the member of staff has been spoken to and slapped on a three month probation, reports The Mirror.

The pubgoer uploaded a picture of the receipt, which read: “Terre Forte Pinot Grigio – ice in it f**king bogans.”

One Reddit user said: “If you can’t do your job without showing basic human respect, you need to find an industry that limits your contact with the public.”

Another said: “At the end of the day, doesn’t matter what’s ‘expected’ or ‘appropriate’.

“The customer has paid for it and can drink it however they like.”

But other users of the platform thought it was funny.

One said: “This is absolutely hilarious but also very amateur to leave the notes on the receipt for the customer.”

Someone else called the server a “legend” for what they did.

The Daily Express has contacted The Cornish Arms for comment.

The restaurant told 7News: “Staff were spoken to and reminded of their workplace responsibilities and the junior staff member then came forward to management and was very apologetic, not realising it would print on the customer’s receipt.

“She has been spoken to and placed on a three-month probation.

“Her comment in no way reflects the values of The Cornish Arms and we will continue to educate and train staff to ensure the business evolves.

“The customer has since been spoken with and will be returning for a meal on us soon.”

So what is the correct etiquette when it comes to popping ice into your wine glass?

David Moore, owner of Michelin-starred restaurant Pied-a-Terre in central London, told The Independent his view on the matter.

He said: “If you want ice, have ice. I regularly enjoy an iced up white wine, and buy a good value bottle to do that.”
