Queen said her lawn was ‘ruined’ by Trump’s helicopters

The Queen joked “‘come and look at my lawn, it’s ruined’ with guests after Donald Trump’s helicopters left craters in Buckingham Palace grass”

  • The Queen reportedly joked about her dismay with Scott Morrison the day after Trump arrived for his three day state visit
  • Morrison had travelled to the UK for the 75th D-Day commemorations
  • Scorch marks and divots are thought to have been caused by Trump’s helicopter landing on the palace’s main lawn twice

The Queen is said to have joked to the Australian prime minister over scorch marks and divots left on Buckingham Palace’s lawn by Donald Trump’s helicopters during the president’s state visit.

On the first day of the visit in June, Trump along with his wife Melania, landed in Marine One in front of the palace. A support helicopter also parked on the lawn.

Later in the day, the president made another helicopter journey from Winfield House, the U.S. ambassador’s residence, where he was staying during the three day state visit, back to the palace.

Once again the helicopter landed on the palace’s lawn so the president could attend a state banquet.

The Queen is said to have commented to Australian prime minister, Scott Morrison, about the two messy helicopter landings the day after Trump’s arrival.

A source close to Morrison told the Sunday Times the queen had expressed her dismay over scorch marks thought to have been caused by the helicopter’s engines along with the divots caused by the wheels.

‘Come and look at my lawn. It’s ruined,’ she reportedly said.

It is thought to have been a light hearted comment.

Morrison had travelled to the UK for the 75th D-Day commemorations.

President Trump was enthusiastic throughout the visit and heaped praise on Queen Elizabeth II during the state dinner in Buckingham Palace.

‘On behalf of all Americans I offer a toast to the eternal friendship of our people, the vitality of our nations and truly remarkable reign of Her Majesty the Queen,’ Trump said.

In a string of tweets before the event, the president said: ‘London part of trip is going really well. The Queen and the entire Royal family have been fantastic. The relationship with the United Kingdom is very strong.’

Pictures showing the Queen engaged in conversation with Trump during the banquet don’t suggest she shared her distress over the state of her lawn with him during dinner.
