Queen snub: Why the Queen WON’T step down for Prince Charles | Royal | News

Prince Charles has allegedly stepped up as a “shadow king” in the wake of controversy surrounding Prince Andrew this year. The Prince was allegedly part responsible for seeing his younger brother give up royal duties, and he appeared in his father’s stead at the State Opening of Parliament in October.

Recent speculation has mounted the Queen is planning to use her 95th birthday to step back permanently and make Charles Prince Regent.

As Prince Regent, he would have the powers of his mother without holding the title of King and act as her proxy.

Speaking to the Mail Online in 2017, royal commentator Robert Jobson said Queen Elizabeth II was considering the move to make the transition of the Crown “seamless”.

He told the publication: “I understand the Queen has given the matter considerable thought and believes that, if she is still alive at 95, she will seriously consider passing the reign to Charles.”

“Her Majesty is mindful of her age and wants to make sure when the time comes, the transition of the Crown is seamless.”

Prince Philip retired from royal duties due to his age at 96, and people expected the monarch to do the same.

However, recent rumblings from sources close to the Royal Family suggest the Queen is unlikely to do so.

One source told Vanity Fair: “There is no sign of any handover or retirement”.

Speaking to the Sun, a source revealed Charles acted “decisively” in the wake of Prince Andrew’s Newsnight interview.

Prince Andrew is said to have stepped back from his duties after the “ongoing discussions” with senior members of The Firm, and a word from Charles himself.

He reportedly told the Queen: “Andrew has to go….it is the only way”.

Once he returned from a royal tour in November, Charles allegedly went straight to his father Prince Philip to discuss how the Royal Family would weather the accusations.

While the allegations against Andrew proved potentially damaging for the Royal Family, another source has revealed there are no impending changes to The Firm’s structure.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, they revealed the family is still “firmly driven” by the Queen.

They said: “There seems to be an inference that because of what has happened with Prince Andrew, a huge amount of change is about to happen. It’s not.

“The Royal Family is firmly being driven by the Queen and that will continue to be the case.”
