AN extremely rare Christmas stamp – featuring a printing error – was due to go under the hammer at a local online auction today.
The ‘Faceless Angel’ 3p Christmas stamp, one of just 24 known to be in existence, is one of hundreds of rare postage lots going under the hammer with JC Auctions.
The 3p stamp was produced by Royal Mail for Christmas in 1972. The error stamp is meant to depict an angel from heaven.
However, a printing mishap meant the stamp is missing its red-brown colour over the gold, meaning the angel has no face, or detailing on the wings, hair, hands, the trim of the robe, and the lute strings.
Correct versions of the mass-produced stamp are worth £1. The error stamp is expected to sell for £550 in the Crown & Dragon Stamp Auction II.
The ‘Faceless Angel’ is just one of more than 380 rare stamps from the UK, China and the Commonwealth set to feature in the online auction.
Another star lot includes a rare example of the 1965 ‘Missing Post Office Tower’ stamp.
Created to celebrate the opening of the London landmark, one sheet of 120 stamps were printed without the gold tower.
The error stamp is one of around 30 unused examples to still exist today. It is expected to generate around £1,750.
Of the two lots, Mike Hall of St Helier-based JC Auctions said: “Christmas errors are among the most sought-after stamps in the hobby, and the ‘Faceless Angel’ is among the most desirable. It’s nostalgic, visually striking, and rare.”
He added: “The Missing Post Office Tower stamp is one of the most notorious modern British errors.”
“The mistake is so glaring that the stamp has built up a huge following.”
