Red Arrows may be scrapped alongside Royal Marines and Paras

World-famous aerobatic display team the Red Arrows could be scrapped in a bid to cut millions from the defence budget.

The team, a global ambassador for the RAF and the UK, may have to go as the next Government looks at balancing the books, according to The Mirror .

The display team costs £10million a year to run.

Other units at risk under current possible plans include the RAF Regiment, the Paras and the Royal Marines. The Paras and Marines could be combined into one unit.

The Army could lose the Guards Division as well as all tank and heavy armoured vehicle units.

The Army could be cut back to 65,000 soldiers. The plans will be part of a defence review in 2020.

The Red Arrows were last under threat in a defence review in 2013.

An MoD spokesman said: “Discussions around cuts or changes to programmes are pure speculation. We will always ensure the Armed Forces have the people and equipment to keep Britain safe.”
