On Saturday, for the first time in many a day, I had post delivered – seven items, from Leeds, Gwent, Bexley, Bristol, Sunderland, Bournemouth and Dudley. None had an ordinary stamp but C9 codes, indicating they were only handled by Royal Mail at the final stage. All the correspondence had different dates in September – why did they all arrive on the same day? If there is a plan to stop second-class Saturday deliveries, I can envisage my letters never being delivered.

Jonathan Reynolds, the business secretary, says that he would “really worry about how we would protect vulnerable people” in relation to the assisted dying vote (Cabinet set for split over support for England and Wales assisted dying bill, 4 October). I wonder if his concern extends to those affected by the withdrawal of the winter fuel payment.

Thank you, Barney Ronay, for the best journalism I’ve read for a long time (Euston, you have a problem: train travel to football and the basic futility of hope, 5 October). Takes a proper journalist to make me laugh, cry and be really, really angry all at the same time.

If the Tories are serious about change, James Cleverly should be the next leader. He would be the first Tory leader with a beard since Lord Salisbury resigned in 1902.
