I often wonder what the world would be like if we didn’t have the internet, and I’ve been wondering recently in the context of online shopping during a pandemic. If it had been simply impossible to buy anything, would we have had a complete reset, padding about in ancient clothes, with grey hair, faces decorated with the last few scrapings of well-loved cosmetics on special occasions? Would we have ground our own henna and slapped avocado and egg white on our faces, or would that just have been considered a waste of food? It’s a strange thought, one of those moments when you just glimpse a whole alternative existence out of the corner of your eye.
Happily the woad emergency seems to have been averted.
