There’s many memories of legendary RTE broadcaster Larry Gogan – but none quite as memorable as the Just a Minute quiz.
Larry, 81, died yesterday and his death was announced this morning on RTE.
Over six decades he entertained us on RTE1, 2FM and latterly RTE Gold.
And of course, he was the host of the legendary Just a Minute Quiz, the quick-fire radio quiz that became legendary for throwing up the most bizarre, hilarious and downright wrong answers ever heard on Irish radio.
When it all went wrong (as it frequently did) Larry would comfort contestants with a cheery; “They didn’t suit you today, did they?”
As we remember Larry Gogan, we thought we’d share some of the best (including one or two that Larry swore never actually happened).
- What was Hitler’s first name? Heil!
- Name something a blind man might use? A sword!
- Can you divide 132 by 11? Yes!
- What is the capital of France? F!
- Can you name a bird with a long neck? Naomi Campbell!
- Where’s the Great Wall? Crumlin! (technically correct, there was a Chinese called the Great Wall in the Dublin suburb)
- Where’s the Taj Mahal? Opposite the Dental Hospital!
- What star do Travellers follow? Joe Dolan!
- An Item of clothing worn by the Three Musketeers? A horse!
- Name a famous Royal? Mail!
- Something you wear on the beach? A deckchair!
- Can you name something that people might be allergic to? Skiing!
And finally – one that Larry always said never happened – but at least one producer who worked with him on the radio said actually did.
The Just a Minute Quiz was getting down to the final seconds and Larry asked a Dub contestant; “Can you finish this well-known phrase – As Happy As…..”
The Dubliner was stumped and Larry, ever the gentleman, tried to help out…
“Now, it’s As Happy As …. come on, you know it… think of me!”
Sudden inspiration and the contestant almost shouted: “A pig in shite!”
Thanks for the memories, Larry – ar dheis Dé go raibh a hanam.
