Residents of village street vote to correct confusing quarter century mistake over name – The Irish News

All eight households of a street in a Co Tyrone village have backed correcting a mistake made 25 years ago by both a local council and the Royal Mail.

The residents of Laurel Drive in Aughnacloy voted to retire ‘Laural Drive’, bringing to an end 25 years of confusion for delivery drivers and others.

They can also now move forward with a vote on erecting dual language signs, stalled until residents decided to ditch Laural, a word with no meaning in English.

While the correct spelling is on the signs on the actual street, those on the the adjoining Lettice Street included the words leading to ‘Laural Drive’

‘Laural Drive’ had been approved as a street name by Dungannon and South Tyrone Borough Council and the Royal Mail – in September 2000, without the spelling being queried.

The matter was initially mentioned at an Environment committee meeting of Mid Ulster District Council on November 12, 2024.

A new survey will now be carried out, to find out whether the residents want to opt for bilingual Irish-English street signage.
