A review has been launched after a woman in her 70s was badly injured on a rib (rigid inflatable boat) in Llandudno Bay. The incident happened on Friday.
Aqua Tours has released a statement which said it is conducting an internal review and has been in contact with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB).
It said: “With over 1,000 happy passengers joining us on the water this year, safety has always been and will remain our highest priority.
“Unfortunately, on Friday 5th September, an incident occurred onboard one of our RIB trips, during which the RNLI and Coastguard provided assistance.
“We remain in close contact with the person(s) involved / affected and are offering support where we can.
“As a responsible operator, we are liaising with the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) and have also begun our own internal review.
“We continue to operate within strict procedures and government guidelines, but as with any outdoor activity, there is always an element of risk and, on rare occasions, incidents can happen.
“We are carefully reviewing all of our protocols to identify if and where any further improvements can be made. We are also engaging with the media directly to ensure accurate information is shared.”
Following the incident, the RNLI Llandudno’s inshore lifeboat said the casualty suffered a nasty back injury on a rib ride, which operated from Conwy, and couldn’t move from her seat because the pain was so bad.
Llandudno’s inshore lifeboat was launched and members of the town’s Coastguard Rescue Team (CRT) were joined by colleagues from Penmon and Bangor, a lifeboat spokesperson added.
The lifeboat was equipped with a basket stretcher and medical gases. By the time it arrived, the rib had been secured alongside Llandudno’s North Shore jetty in the Conwy resort.
Realising the woman’s back injury was “serious”, the four-strong lifeboat crew administered Entonox, pain relief, an inhaled mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. This allowed the crew and Coastguards to safely extract the casualty onto a rigid stretcher.
With no confirmed arrival time for an ambulance, the teams moved the casualty to the nearby Merrion Hotel on the promenade, where staff had prepared a comfortable space in the reception area. It wasn’t until the evening that an ambulance arrived.
