Dame Moya Greene has resigned from her role as non-executive director of Rio Tinto with immediate effect, after spending nine months in the position.

Greene joined the Rio Tinto board in September 2018 but commented that the role was taking up more time than she had previously anticipated.

“I have enjoyed my time on the Rio Tinto board but the time commitment has proven more considerable than I had expected and I have taken the difficult decision to step down from Rio in order to re-focus on my other roles,” she said.

A Canadian national, Greene has worked in both the private and public sectors in a number of leadership roles.

She was chief executive officer of the Royal Mail from 2010-2018 and was previously the president and chief executive officer of Canada Post.

Greene moved into the business sector following a career in the Canadian civil service, culminating with her serving as Assistant Deputy Minister for Transport Canada.

Rio Tinto chairman Simon Thompson said he “would like to thank Moya for her contribution to Rio Tinto during her time on the board.”

“My fellow directors and I wish her well for the future,” he concluded.
