Ritz fire: Police warning as iconic Brighouse building goes up in smoke – full statement

The Ritz is currently in flames

Emergency services are responding to a “large fire” which has taken hold of a building in Brighouse.

A building, believed to be The Ritz, is on fire in Brighouse. It is not yet know what caused the fire, or whether anyone has been hurt. West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue and West Yorkshire Police have been contacted for more information.

Police have closed roads surrounding the fire in both directions while firefighters tackle the blaze. The force has warned neighbours to stay clear and close windows due to the smoke.

Posting to Facebook at around 6pm, a police spokesman said: “There is a large fire at the junction of Bradford Road and Bonegate Road in Brighouse. Road closures are in place as a result in both directions.

“Please stay clear of the area whilst it is being dealt with. We advise that those living close by keep doors and windows closed due to the smoke.”

Dozens of residents have taken to public Facebook group Brighouse Matters to post about the fire and share their shock and sadness. Among them was John Rawcliffe, who, posting to Brighouse Matters, said: “Shame spent my youth dancing, well trying in there, good times and memories.”

While Vicki Firth said: “Very very sad day for Brighouse – my Mum and Aunti used to tell me about events they went to in the 1960’s, and how fab the dance floor was..!!!”
