Rotary Club presents screening of Stanley Kubrick classic to raise funds for Prostate Scotland

FANS OF science fiction movies are in for a big treat early next month when the Stanley Kubrick classic 2001: A Space Odyssey is screened at Mareel to raise funds for Prostate Scotland.

The event has been organised by the local Rotary Club as part of its annual fundraiser for the charity.

The local Rotary branch has a long history of organising events in support of Prostate Scotland, including a static bike challenge to find Shetland’s fastest cyclist on a gym bike.

Rotary president Paul Bendix said that this year, however, the logistics of getting the heavy machines to and from the Co-op carpark – where the challenge usually takes place – had proved more challenging than usual, and so the club turned to Shetland Arts for support.

Bendix, who describes himself as a movie buff, said: “With the focus on the human journey from prehistory to living outside Earth’s confines, this film is one that is worth revisiting on the big screen to fully appreciate its scope and cinematography.”

Tickets are available from Mareel’s box office for the one-off screening on Saturday 2 November at 2:30pm, at a cost of £10 for an adult ticket and £5 for children.

He added: “Be entertained and help support a worthy cause at the same time.”
