In a remarkable medical breakthrough, the transplant team at Royal Care Hospital has successfully saved the life of a six-year-old boy who was suffering from severe heart failure caused by a viral infection.
The child, referred from a private hospital, arrived in a critical condition—on ventilator support and dependent on multiple life-saving medications.
With no other treatment options available, the medical team determined that a heart transplant was the only viable chance for survival.
While awaiting a suitable donor, the child’s condition deteriorated further, prompting doctors to place him on ECMO (Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation), a system that temporarily takes over the function of both the heart and lungs. Though ECMO is lifesaving, prolonged support carries significant risk.
After nearly three weeks, a donor heart became available—a 30-year-old adult heart nearly five times larger than the child’s own. Despite initial dysfunction caused by brain-death–related changes, the transplant team proceeded with the complex surgery.
Post-transplant, the child remained on ECMO for an additional 15 days to allow the new heart to recover and adapt.
Following almost three months of intensive medical care, the boy has made a remarkable recovery and is now preparing for discharge.
