Royal children’s clothing designer teams up with beloved New York City icon Eloise for the holidays

A British clothing designer with ties to the royal family has teamed up with beloved New York City icon Eloise.

Designer Rachel Riley (not to be confused with the TV presenter) launched a childrenswear capsule collection for Eloise at the Plaza’s 70th Anniversary and visited New York City to celebrate the sweet collaboration.

Rachel’s designs have long been a favorite with the British Royal family and have been worn by Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis on 22 different public occasions.

The renowned British brand is a favorite with New Yorkers, as the model turned designer created a collection devoted to Eloise, the infamous six-year-old character created by author Kay Thompson.

The character famously lived at Manhattan’s Plaza Hotel and was always getting into trouble, whether she was traveling to Paris with her nanny or her pug, Weenie.

Now, The Plaza has embraced the character’s popularity – offering an Eloise-themed tea and even a stunning on-theme suite to channel the sassy character.

The books were first published in 1955, followed by multiple sequels and movies, including a popular Christmas film.

Rachel paid homage to the 1950s illustrations done by Hilary Knight told FEMAIL she ‘pored over every aspect of the drawings.’

Rachel’s attention to detail was immaculate, as she created a toy box theme using all of the toys in her bedroom for one of the prints and a music theme with the record player from her bedroom.

Eloise famously wears a white blouse with a frilly collar and a black pleated skirt in most of the books, and it quickly became the brand’s bestseller.

‘This is such a great shape for little girls, and it has been the most popular, with the Eloise T-shirt coming in at second place,’ Rachel revealed to DailyMail.com

Rachel even created a dress that Eloise never quite wore.

It was inspired by the Eloise in Paris book when she visited Christian Dior’s atelier.

‘In the illustration, a kindly Mr. Dior is contemplating how to dress Eloise, while his entourage is measuring and choosing fabric,’ Rachel explained. ‘To one side, Nanny is looking at the beautiful design of a couture dress.’

Nanny imagined Eloise wearing a drop-waist dress with a Peter Pan collar and skirt with a bow on the side.

While Eloise didn’t technically end up wearing the Dior dress because she was up to her usual hijinks, Rachel made a version that little girls can wear today with a modern twist.

This special collection is available at Saks Fifth Avenue, online, and at The Plaza and prices range from $18 to $175.

The Cambridge graduate started her brand in 1988 and experienced the Prince George effect when items sold out swiftly after the tot was spotted wearing them for major events, like his sister’s christening.

Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis followed his footsteps and chose classics from the designer as well.

The designs the royal children wore were just as popular with fans in the United States, especially for Christmas photos.

The mother-of-three’s company is now a family affair, and her husband, Daniel Jouanneau who she met on set when she was a model, is a photographer, while her daughter, Rose, joined the company a little over two years ago.
