The Prince and Princess of Wales have become unlikely rivals as they cheer on opposite sides at the Wales v England Six Nations match tonight – and Kate appeared to let slip a “nervous” whisper ahead of the game.
Prince William and Kate Middleton have found themselves on opposing sides as they cheer for different teams at the Wales v England Six Nations match tonight, with Kate reportedly sharing a “nervous” whisper before the game.
They are attending the match at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium, their respective patronages leading them to support rival teams. Prince William has been patron of the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) since 2016, while the Princess of Wales took over the patronage of the Rugby Football League (RFL) from Prince Harry in 2022.
The Royal couple, known for their competitive spirit, have previously joked about their divided loyalties during the tournament, with William backing Wales and Kate supporting England. In 2023, William humorously commented that it would be a “tense journey home” after a Six Nations Wales v England match in Cardiff.
As they settled into their seats at the stadium, Kate was spotted next to Rob Udwin, president of the RFU, and appeared to share a “nervous” whisper with him.
According to a lip reader speaking to the Mirror, Kate turned to him and said: “He is nervous, I can see he is”.
It remains unclear who they were discussing, but Rob responded by saying: “He is certainly not an amateur”, to which Kate agreed, adding “he certainly is not”. Rob then complimented the player, stating: “He is very impressive”, with Kate nodding in agreement and saying: “He plays very well as I imagined”.
Meanwhile, Prince William was seated next to Kate, with Terry Cobner, president of the WRU, joining him on his left, reports the Mirror.
Before the much-anticipated match, the Prince and Princess of Wales spent time with injured players who had been supported by the Welsh Rugby Charitable Trust. The meeting took place in the Sir Tasker Watkins Suite at the stadium, a space dedicated to the players and their families before games.
Prince William is the patron of the trust, which was established to assist players who have suffered severe injuries while playing rugby in Wales, as well as their loved ones. The trust invites them to every home game in Wales and hosts an annual family day.
This joint appearance by the Royal couple comes as Princess Kate gradually resumes her public duties after announcing in January that she is in remission from cancer. In a message shared on social media at the time, the Princess of Wales expressed her focus on recovery and the relief she felt.
“I wanted to take the opportunity to say thank you to The Royal Marsden for looking after me so well during the past year. My heartfelt thanks goes to all those who have quietly walked alongside William and me as we have navigated everything. We couldn’t have asked for more. The care and advice we have received throughout my time as a patient has been exceptional,” she said.
“In my new role as Joint Patron of The Royal Marsden, my hope is, that by supporting ground breaking research and clinical excellence, as well as promoting patient and family wellbeing, we might save many more lives, and transform the experience of all those impacted by cancer.”
Kate said: “It is a relief to now be in remission and I remain focussed on recovery. As anyone who has experienced a cancer diagnosis will know, it takes time to adjust to a new normal. I am however looking forward to a fulfilling year ahead. There is much to look forward to. Thank you to everyone for your continued support.”
She is set to attend Saturday’s match, followed by an engagement with the Irish Guards on St Patrick’s Day in London on Monday.
