Royal Family: Charles set to ‘lose’ Cotswold estate with ‘terrorist attack bunker’ now he’s King

King Charles didn’t just inherit his position as head of state when his mum Queen Elizabeth passed away, he also inherited one of the biggest property portfolios in the world. The Crown Estate consists of 263,000 acres of land across the UK as well as six royal and private dwellings including Buckingham Palace.

But as Charles became King, his son Prince William inherited his title as Prince of Wales and with it his £1.2billion Duchy of Cornwall holdings. King Charles had acquired many private properties during his time as heir including Highgrove House, which Charles bought in 1980 just before he married Princess Diana.

The future of Highgrove House is now uncertain. King Charles may choose to keep it in his possession or he may chose to pass it down. Here’s a run down of what’s inside the Cotswold estate.

Highgrove House is King Charles’ Gloucestershire home

Located in Gloucestershire, Charles refurbished the nine-bedroom, six-bathroom mansion to be more environmentally friendly and transformed the gardens into a beautiful spot for visitors. The public can visit the house at permitted times.

However, as well as being beautiful the property also benefits from an impressive security system. Charles had a steel-lined panic room installed within the property for in the event of a terrorist attack. Inside the room, there are said to be medical supplies, radio transmitters, air purifiers and long-lasting food and drinks.

According to the royal biographer Brian Hoey in his book Not in Front of the Corgis, the ‘iron room’ measures 20ft by 20ft. Hoey added: “[It] has been so built that even if the rest of the house is destroyed, it will drop intact to the ground floor.”

He wrote: “Inside are medical supplies, including containers of Charles and Camilla’s blood group, long-lasting food and drinks, an armoury, radio transmitters equipped to obtain a signal even within its steel walls, air purifiers and chemical lavatories.”

The steel room is so strong that the Royal family members inside would be able to survive for weeks.
