Royal Family ‘concerned’ for Prince Andrew after release of new Amazon drama

Members of the Royal Family are reportedly concerned about Prince Andrew following the release of a new drama.

Rebecca English, the Daily Mail’s Royal Editor, commented that Andrew “comes across as the most obnoxious individual you would ever have the misfortune to meet” in Amazon Prime’s new A Very Royal Scandal.

On the Palace Confidential podcast, her colleague Jo Elvin remarked: “A lot of us have this assumption that Andrew is impervious to public perception but it must affect him in some ways.”

Royal commentator Charlotte Griffiths added that Andrew has been on something of an emotional rollercoaster after the backlash from his “car crash” interview. She mentioned he was bedridden with depression at one point before “bouncing back like Tigger”.

Charlotte said: “Recently I’ve been hearing that he’s going through quite a low stage, and actually some of the family get quite worried about him. It’s kind of a terrifying thing to be completely and utterly hauled over the calls in front of the whole nation.”

A Very Royal Scandal primarily presents the interview from Newsnight presenter Emily Maitlis’s viewpoint. However, Rebecca points out, “there’s quite a lot from the heart of Buckingham Palace and also Royal Lodge”.

After the infamous interview, it appeared Andrew was disheartened, yet episode two of the drama shows him conveying optimism to Emily Maitlis. Michael Sheen, embodying Andrew, expresses “I am most grateful for the opportunity. Obviously it was a risk but I felt it [was good]. Thank you, Emily.”

The show also shows Andrew’s private secretary Amanda Thirsk getting fired due to her involvement in setting up the interview. Portrayed by Joanna Scanlan, Amanda is informed by the Queen’s private secretary of the dire consequences of her actions that “managed single-handedly to threaten the survival of the monarchy”.

The Royal aide is then told: “I am afraid you’re going to need to step back. We’ll have you sign an NDA and there will be the usual severance package, but as of Monday you no longer work for the Duke of York.”

Despite this dramatic representation, a fresh BBC report suggests that the true Amanda Thirsk still plays a supportive role for Andrew.

A spokesperson for the Palace has been approached for comment.
