Royal Family: Prince William and Kate Middleton ‘want to swap palace for castle when Queen dies’

Whilst no-one is relishing it, it’s only reasonable to assume the day will soon come when the Queen passes away and the Royal household undergoes a reshuffle.

When Prince Charles becoming king he will have his pick of royal properties to choose from, as will his eldest son, Prince William, along with Kate, Duchess of Cambridge.

With the Queen’s regular homes of Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle, and Balmoral becoming available, William and Kate may well have their eyes on one of these.

According to a royal source of The Mail on Sunday , Prince Charles is intending to radically ‘slim down’ the monarchy upon ascending to the throne, with ‘the property question’ on his to-do list.

The source told The Mail : “The central point is: when the Queen is no longer here, how do you effectively spread two generations of the family across quite a large number of properties?

“The Prince of Wales strongly believes that these places have got to deliver something for the public beyond just being somewhere for members of the Royal Family to live. Everything is seen through the lens of the question: ‘What value is this offering to the public?

“Everybody recognises it makes no sense to run so many residences but if you give them up entirely you will never get them back when Prince George and the younger Royals grow up and need somewhere to live.”

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge currently split their home life between two residences, the first being Kensington Palace in Central London.

The second is further north in Norfolk, a country mansion called Anmer Hall, based on the Sandringham estate and given to them as a wedding gift by the Queen.

With a growing family, it’s understandable that the couple might want some more space, and with 1,000 rooms Windsor Castle certainly has that

However, when it becomes available, William and Kate are said to be keen to move into Windsor Castle according to a friend of Prince Charles who spoke to the MailOnline .

“Charles is not keen on Windsor because it is quite noisy,” the source said.

“His view is that if he’s heading to Windsor, he may as well carry on to Highgrove in Gloucestershire.”

Therefore, there is a way for Kate and William to turn Windsor Castle into a dream family home.

And with 1,000 rooms, they certainly can’t complain of being short on space if they do.
