This is the time of the year when the Royal Family start heading north for summer. This has been a tradition for decades, with generations of royals heading to the Queen’s estate at Balmoral to enjoy the area’s exceptional natural beauty.
This includes a young Prince William and Kate Middleton who were studying nearby at the Scottish University St Andrews. The lovebirds apparently used to come to Balmoral to enjoy the peace and quiet in a cottage on the Queen’s estate.
Will and Kate are said to have had some of their most romantic moments staying at a three-bedroom cottage called Tam-na-Ghar, when they would visit during their university breaks. The pair would enjoy country walks and dine together.

In 2009 – two years before they got married – William surprised his then-girlfriend with something special. He arranged a candle-lit dinner in a remote log cabin on the banks of the River Dee. The pair reportedly told friends they have enjoyed some of their happiest times together there.
After their marriage and starting a family of their own, the Cambridges still come to the cottage with their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The Duke and Duchess will often pop up to visit the Queen for a few days traveling by helicopter to the castle.

Kate’s parents have also stayed at Balmoral. Carole and Michael Middleton have been guests of Prince Charles at his Scottish hunting lodge, Birkhall.
Tam-na-Ghar was gifted to William back in 2002 by the Queen Mother shortly before her death, and is one of the Cambriges most private residences.
The 50,000-acre Balmoral estate holds 150 buildings including a vast range of cottages, meaning that pinning it down isn’t easy.
