Royal Family: The surprisingly normal food King Charles ‘hates’ but his mum the Queen loved

It’s no secret that the Queen had a sweet tooth for all things chocolate. In fact, she loved sweet treats so much her favourite floral chocolates cost a whopping £280. At a lower level, our late sovereign would each day enjoy a chocolate biscuit with her afternoon tea.

Chief chocolatier at Charbonnel et Walker Adam Lee, claimed in an ITV documentary that the Queen really enjoys floral cream flavours. He said: “The Queen does have a list of favourite chocolates with us. But I’m not allowed to divulge that directly to you.

“However, I can just say that she has very floral tastes, which may become evident if we look at the chocolates a little bit later… But maybe we should start with our two most popular chocolates, which are rose and violet creams. I never said a word, never said a word.”

The Queen adored chocolate

However our new monarch – King Charles III – adopts a slightly different take on chocolate. In short: he doesn’t like it. Former Buckingham Palace chef Darren McGrady said: “Anything we put on the menu that had chocolate on, she [the Queen] would pick off the menu”. This was because Charles is a savoury over sweet man.

So much so in fact that he launched his own organic range, Duchy Originals, over 25 years ago. Speaking to the Daily Mail, Charles’ former chef Carolyn Robb said: “He liked to have his own food with him.

“He couldn’t risk going down with a bad stomach when he was so busy,” she continued.

Graham Tinsley MBE, is another former Royal Chef, once managing the Welsh Culinary Team. He experience the slightly more bizarre side of Charles’ eating as he led his team of culinary experts catering for royal events across Wales.

When it comes to creating banquet menus, the chef said the only “little quirks” the team found were with Prince Charles, who was the patron of the Welsh Culinary Team.

Graham said: “Prince Charles doesn’t like chocolate, he doesn’t like coffee, nor does he like garlic. So we do have to consider these things when we’re creating a menu for him.” Blimey, it’d be interesting to be a fly on the wall when coming up with Charles’ menu.
