I’ve seen the royal family visit their fair share of Commonwealth nations, from Prince William’s recent adventures in South Africa to Princess Anne’s 2024 trip to Sri Lanka. Now, in honor of Commonwealth Day, Buckingham Palace is taking fans down memory lane with highlights from the royals’ previous visits to Commonwealth nations.
In case you missed it, the royal family took to Instagram and shared several pics from their travels in 2024 and 2025, including a snap of Duchess Sophie speaking with choir members in Malta and King Charles letting his hair down in Samoa. The caption reads, “Thank you to everyone around the Commonwealth who has welcomed a member of the Royal Family to their country in the past year.”
As much as I enjoyed revisiting these highlights, however, there was one photo that immediately stood out. On the very first slide, a very relaxed King Charles and Queen Camilla posed among students at the Sydney Opera House in Sydney, Australia.
Taken in October 2024, the striking photo shows His Majesty donning a pair of shades as he stands beside a beaming Queen Camilla. The sunlight hits their faces directly, creating a bright glow as the children who surround them all raise their hands. One fan commented, “We loved having you in Australia.” Another added, “Camilla looks happy and pretty.”
You might recall that their Majesties had an action-packed agenda in Australia, attending events in Sydney and Canberra that focused on sustainability and protecting the environment from climate change. The pair also enjoyed a community barbecue near Sydney, where they chatted with local representatives of Australia’s cultural scene. And best of all, they received the ultimate greeting when they arrived on day one.

In addition to sharing a collection of throwback photos on IG, the king penned a personal statement on the royal family’s official website, noting the significance of the Commonwealth Day. He wrote, “The Commonwealth’s ability to bring together people from all over the world has stood the test of time and remains as ever-important today. Leaders recently reiterated the importance of collaboration for peace and human rights, as well as for the restoration of Nature both on land and in the oceans.”
He continued, “As we mark this Commonwealth Day together, there is no more important task than to restore the disrupted harmony of our entire planet. For the sake of our younger generations’ threatened future, I can only hope that the Commonwealth will continue its vital work to restore that harmony.”
His Majesty also included his special signature, “Charles R.” Royal enthusiasts might recall that the letter “R” stands for “Rex,” which is the Latin translation of the word “king.” (His late mother, Queen Elizabeth II, also signed letters with her unique signature, writing “Elizabeth R.” In this case, the “R” stands for Regina, which means “queen” in Latin.)
