Royal fans have been left disappointed at the sparse Buckingham Palace balcony at this year’s Trooping the Colour – after just 14 family members appeared yesterday compared to 40 four years ago.
Those who love The Firm say they miss seeing so many members of the family come together – and have branded yesterday’s pared down balcony as ‘boring’.
Last year, 17 members – and the late Queen – were present, but missing from this year’s balcony was the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh’s children, James, Earl of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor.
James, 15, and Lady Louise, 19, also made an appearance on the balcony for the Coronation last month.
In 2019, more than 40 royals were gathered together on the balcony, eager to watch the iconic flypast
This year only 14 royals were spotted on the balcony for Trooping the Colour – with a large gap between older members of The Firm and the new generation
Also absent from Trooping the Colour this year was Princess Alexandra, 86, a cousin of the late Queen.
This year only 14 royals stood on the balcony – a stark contrast to 2019, where more than 40 royals were smiling together, excited to watch the flypast.
One royal fan shared the two images on Twitter and wrote: ‘ So sad that the balcony appearance after #TroopingtheColour will be so predictable from now on.
‘I loved having a close look at balcony pictures to see who was there and who was not.
‘It’s so unnecessary and boring that this lovely tradition has gone now!’
Another person replied on the thread and said: ‘Couldn’t agree more! If the Christmas walk can include all the family, why can’t Trooping the Colour?
‘I miss seeing the camaraderie & mingling & celebrating.’
A third penned: ‘It is a shame but things may change with the next generation (eg. William’s grandchildren all included).’
Another person tweeted: ‘Many complaints about the balcony today at #TroopingtheColour, this the kings slimmed down working royals.
Royal enthusiasts took to Twitter to express their disappointment about the sparse balcony this year
‘I see William once he becomes king involving his cousins, he is and always has been close and they will be a huge support when he takes the crown.’
Another royal enthusiast penned: ‘I do have to say, I miss seeing the broader family on the balcony.
‘Charles could have at least included his nieces and nephews and their children, and excluded the broader Kent and Gloucester clans.
‘It looks a bit sparse up there, and it’s just gonna get smaller.’
Someone else responded to the thread and wrote: ‘Yeah. I’d love to see Lady Louise, James, Bea and Edo as well in the balcony.’
Humorous photographs reveal a group of minor royals who did not make the cut for the King’s main birthday grouping – as they were spotted in a hidden gallery inside the depths of Buckingham Palace
Images show Timothy and Flora Vasterberg, the Earl of St Andrews, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Lady Gabriella and Thomas Kingston also attended the Trooping the Colour parade
The Trooping the Colour celebration has marked the official birthday of the sovereign for more than 260 years and is celebrated in June each year.
Yesterday there was also a sizeable gap between older members of The Firm – the Duke of Kent, 87, and Duke, 78, and Duchess, 76, of Gloucester – and the new generation of royals on the Buckingham Palace balcony.
It could be that the King and Queen are making a clear point about the future of the Royal Family with their selections, and the distance between senior royals and less active members of The Firm.
There were also minor royals who didn’t make the cut for the balcony and were spotted in a hidden gallery inside the depths of Buckingham Palace.
Timothy and Flora Vasterberg, the Earl of St Andrews, Lord Nicholas Windsor, Lady Gabriella and Thomas Kingston were not present on the main balcony with the King and Queen.
