Royal Hotel cancel Hull couple’s dream wedding with just three months notice

A Hull couple claim their dream wedding was left in tatters after their hotel venue cancelled with just three months to go until the big day.

The couple, who wish only to be known as Mike and Sue, say they originally booked the Royal Hotel Hull in Ferensway for their wedding ceremony and breakfast in 2020.

The celebrations to mark the special occasion with their friends and family were to last a whole day and had to be postponed once already due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was a chance conversation Sue had mid last month that the couple say left them worried their wedding plans may be in danger of being cancelled.

The couple claim they were informed the hotel had been closed for short-term bookings for several months by a member of the public, but say they received no warning from the hotel that their May wedding would be cancelled.

Mike said: “Sue was in town shopping when she chatted to a shopkeeper and mentioned the wedding at the hotel.

“She went, ‘Oh, you better give them a ring, because they’re not open to the public’.”

Consequently, the couple did ring the hotel to check.

Mike claims a member of staff told them there was a meeting taking place that week where short-term bookings were being discussed.

On February 18 – nearly three months to the day the couple were due to get married – they claim the hotel cancelled the wedding.

Mike said: “What if we had been getting married in four weeks time?

“We have managed to book another venue with the MKM stadium but can’t say how disappointed we are with how they have not warned us much earlier and left us with just 14 weeks to find another venue to hold the ceremony and day and night celebration.”

The couple say they had paid a £500 deposit for the Royal Hotel venue, which they chose because of its location and reasonable pricing.

They also say the hotel has promised them the deposit will be fully refunded, though may take four weeks.

Britannia Hotels, the company which owns and runs the Royal Hotel Hull have been approached for the opportunity to comment on the story.
