Royal Mail adopts carbon measurement platform

Royal Mail has partnered with Watershed, a platform that helps businesses track and reduce their carbon emissions, to improve its environmental impact.

The move is part of Royal Mail’s efforts to reduce emissions across its supply chain, which accounts for roughly two-thirds of its total carbon footprint.

As one of the UK’s largest delivery services, Royal Mail faces significant challenges in cutting emissions across its extensive supplier network, it claims.

By using Watershed, the organisation says that it can access detailed emissions data that will guide its decarbonisation strategy and help meet regulatory and stakeholder reporting requirements.

The UK’s primary postal and parcel delivery service has set ambitious climate targets, including reducing its supply chain emissions by 25% by 2030 and 90% by 2040, compared to its 2020-21 baseline.

Watershed claims that its data tools will enable the firm to identify which actions will have the biggest impact in achieving these goals.

“Watershed enables Royal Mail to access granular insights to engage with our diverse range of suppliers and plan emissions reductions,” said Miles Durrant, head of climate strategy & circular at Royal Mail.

“Watershed helps us understand which actions will be most effective for reaching our Net-Zero 2040 goal.”

In just two months, Watershed helped Royal Mail create a draft carbon footprint that accounted for over 3,000 suppliers. Approximately 10% of this data was automatically populated from public reports, streamlining the process.

“It is a privilege to work with Royal Mail to help measure the postal service’s carbon footprint and, ultimately, execute on their climate goals,” said Ellen McCormack, head of Europe at Watershed.

“Royal Mail is a leader in decarbonising the logistics sector and, together with Watershed’s data measurement and management, our potential impact on the industry’s sustainability progress is huge.”

How logistics companies are tackling emissions 

 

Watershed is used by other major businesses such as FedEx, British Airways, Spotify, and Revolut. The platform helps organisations track their emissions, meet environmental reporting requirements, and take steps to reduce their carbon footprint.

Other logistics companies are also turning to data-driven solutions to tackle emissions. For example, UPS has adopted ORION (On-Road Integrated Optimization and Navigation), a system that optimises delivery routes to reduce fuel consumption.

Similarly, Deutsche Post DHL has invested heavily in electric delivery vehicles and green energy solutions to improve sustainability across its operations.
