Royal Mail has launched a prize draw alongside a wider campaign to celebrate the tradition of sending Christmas cards, with the Greeting Card Association welcoming the postal operator’s promotional efforts this year.
Consumers wishing to enter the draw will be able to take a photo of a Christmas card with a 2025 Christmas stamp and with the word ‘magical’ written on the envelope, and then provide their details along with those of the recipient on a special Royal Mail site.
From 1 to 24 December, Royal Mail will give away a £10,000 prize every day, shared equally between the winning card’s sender and the recipient, with a giveaway of £100,000 on Christmas Eve.
There will also be 50 prizes of £1,000, 75 prizes of £500, and 375 prizes of £50, as well as another prize of £50,000 drawn on a surprise day, to be shared between senders and recipients.
Richard Travers, managing director of letters at Royal Mail, said: “Sending cards is a wonderful way to spread some festive cheer and we are making it even more special this year with our Magical Card Prize Draw.
“With more than 1,000 cash prizes to be won, this is our way of celebrating the joy of Christmas cards and giving something back to those who are keeping the tradition alive.”
Royal Mail has also reminded people to send their cards by the last recommended posting dates to arrive in time for Christmas: Wednesday 17 December for Second Class and Saturday 20 December for First Class.
The postal operator has additionally produced a series of TV adverts this year to highlight the tradition of sending Christmas cards.
📣HAVE YOUR SAY…
Its efforts have been praised by trade organisation the Greeting Card Association (GCA).
CEO of the GCA, Amanda Fergusson, said: “It’s no secret we’ve been a critical friend of Royal Mail as we campaign to ensure our postal service stays reliable, affordable and national.
“But we’re thrilled that they’ve rediscovered the part Christmas cards play in making Christmas joyful in their 2025 advertising.
“We enthusiastically agree with Royal Mail that ‘it’s so much more than just a card’.
“We will always support Royal Mail’s unique role in bringing people together through cards at Christmas.
“Being able to send a card for just 87p anywhere across the UK is still a precious Christmas miracle in itself.”
The GCA noted that as well as bringing joy to senders and recipients, sending cards also supports the small high street retailers, printers, designers, and writers involved in their production.
In its recently released 2025 market report, the GCA said the overall retail value of UK single card sales in 2024 totalled £1.53bn, while seasonal sales also remained strong.
“But more important than the numbers, each card plays a small role helping the mental health and wellbeing of millions of card senders and recipients each year,” it added.
