Royal Mail boss Simon Thompson resigns

The chief executive of Royal Mail has stepped down, saying that it was the right time for the company to move forward under new leadership.

Simon Thompson said his decision to leave followed Royal Mail’s deal last month with the Communication Workers Union (CWU), which ended a long-running dispute over jobs and conditions.

Ever since taking the top job in 2021 Thompson has been under pressure over strikes and he has faced criticism from MPs who accused him of not giving “wholly accurate” answers when he appeared before them.

International Distributions Services (IDS), Royal Mail’s parent company, said it was in advanced stages of appointing his replacement. Thompson will stay on until the end of October to help with the transition.
