This afternoon officials issued new list of delivery delays across 151 UK postcodes including in the North East due to staff shortages and other issues
The Royal Mail has released a major delivery alert covering 151 postcodes in today’s announcement. Residents are being cautioned about serious service disruptions which could mean correspondence and packages fail to reach their destinations before Christmas.
Royal Mail revealed that certain local depots are encountering challenges stemming from “issues including high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors”. The postal service acknowledged its commitment to maintaining six-day-a-week deliveries, though admitted that across numerous problem areas, this standard will “temporarily not be possible”.
The organisation warned that households within these affected zones may face postponements to mail and parcels throughout one of the year’s most demanding periods. The firm indicated that delivery routes will be rotated to “minimise delay”, whilst extra assistance has been deployed to help the most severely affected branches cope with escalating festive volumes.
An extensive directory published on the Royal Mail platform today identifies scores of troubled postcodes, spanning the entirety of the UK, from Aberdare in Scotland and Derry in Northern Ireland to Plymouth along England’s southern shoreline.
Royal Mail expressed regret for the disruption, declaring: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding. We will regularly update customers on the offices most impacted.”, reports the Mirror.
This alert comes after a challenging period for the postal operation as it grapples with ongoing difficulties. Royal Mail has been hit with a substantial penalty for missing delivery standards.
Last month, Ofcom handed down a £21 million fine to the postal operator for underperforming against its delivery objectives during the financial year.
The postal giant managed to achieve just 77 per cent of first-class mail and 92.5 per cent of second-class mail delivered punctually in the 2024/25 financial year. These results fell well below the required benchmarks of 93% and 98.5% respectively.
The communications regulator has issued a stark warning that Royal Mail must swiftly produce a convincing recovery strategy or risk facing additional penalties.
This represents the third instance in recent times that Royal Mail has breached its statutory duties. The organisation previously received fines of £5.6 million in November 2023 and £10.5 million in December 2024.
Ian Strawhorne, director of enforcement at Ofcom, declared: “Millions of important letters are arriving late, and people aren’t getting what they pay for when they buy a stamp. These persistent failures are unacceptable, and customers expect and deserve better.”
Ofcom clarified that the penalty reflected the “harm suffered by customers” as a result of Royal Mail’s inadequate performance.
This sanction comes as Royal Mail pursues an ambitious strategy to transform its operations and launch thousands of outlets nationwide for the first time. Around 8,000 Collect+ convenience retailers are planned to be rebranded as Royal Mail outlets.
