If you’re in need of a bit of extra cash this Christmas, one of the best options might be a seasonal role at Royal Mail. Every year the postal service hires thousands of additional temporary workers to handle the increased volume of cards, letters and parcels being sent around the country – and this year is no different.
Roles are already being advertised at sites across the country, including two very close to Surrey: one in Crawley (adjacent to Gatwick Airport ) and one in Croydon. In both locations there are shifts available at various times of day, including early shifts (6am to 2pm), late shifts (2pm to 10pm) and night shifts (10pm to 6am).
The pay varies by location and by time of day. Crawley pays slightly less than Croydon, with early shifts at £11.99 per hour being the lowest paid, while some Sunday shifts paying as much as £16. In Croydon the early shifts pay £13.99 per hour while the best paid Sunday shifts are £18 per hour.

According to the Royal Mail website, its seasonal mail sorters “play a key role in delivering Christmas to the nation. On a daily basis you’ll unload mail and parcels from our vans, move them through our centres plus help sort letters. It’s an important, hands-on role, ensuring every parcel, letter and present reaches their final destination, safely.”
You will need to be able to push trolleys (up to 250 kgs) and lift and move mail bags (up to 11 kg), as well as being comfortable standing for long periods. Experience in warehouse or sorting work is an advantage but not essential. Anyone interested in applying for a role can find out more at the Royal Mail website.
