Royal Mail complaints surge as blackspots continue

Royal Mail complaints have more than doubled in the past three months according to a consumer service, as the problems with delivery blackspots persist.

Scores of people have complained that their post has taken too long to arrive, with a spike  over Christmas.

Resolver, the independent consumer service, received 2,653 complaints about Royal Mail services between December and February, compared to just 1,111 in the three months before, although it did say that this was less than some other delivery firms.

Royal Mail said its own complaints data did not show this trend and a spokesman added that over Christmas it handled more parcels than some of its competitors do in an entire year.

However, he added: “Given the exceptional volumes we have experienced during lockdown, and the ongoing impact of Covid-related staff absences, we recognise that at times our service has not always been as we would have wished.”

It warned on its website that “resourcing issues, associated self-isolation and safety measures” and “very high levels of absence” were causing problems in some parts of the country.

The spokesman added that in 2019-20 it had received around one compliant for every 45,000 items delivered.

Earlier this month, the charity Citizens Advice published research suggesting that as many as a third of people had experienced issues with their post in January, with some suffering negative consequences as a result in the form of missed bills or appointments.

Nearly one in 20 people said they had not received a letter for the entire month.
