Royal Mail customers face delays following disruption to postal network

The postal service urged households to prepare for delays today after three of its network operations were disrupted.

While Royal Mail aims to deliver to “all addresses” six days a week, “significant” issues in its logistics operation mean that this may not be possible.

Its latest update explained that the movement of mail via its air and road networks did not run to schedule, so the post could “arrive later than planned”.

Two mail centres were also affected by delays which have impacted deliveries in select areas.

According to Royal Mail, a flight from East Midlands to Aberdeen was halted last night due to a “technical issue” at the destination.

This has caused widespread delays to deliveries in the North East of Scotland, Orkney and Shetland.

Mail posted in parts of the Midlands, South West, North of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, that is due for delivery today may be impacted by the delays.

On the roads, two vehicles carrying mail to the National Distribution Centre were delayed by junction closures on the M1.

This meant that post arrived later than planned so missed connecting outbound services.

In their service update, Royal Mail stated: “As a result, some mail posted in parts of the EC, N, W1, WC, GU, KT, SW and TW postcode areas, due for delivery in parts of the North East, the North West, the Midlands, the South East of England and parts of Scotland may arrive later than planned.”

The Jubilee Mail Centre and Northern Ireland Mail Centre also ran behind schedule in the last 24 hours.

Mail posted in the GU, KT, SW, and TW postcode areas may be delayed if due for delivery today.

In Northern Ireland, mail due for delivery in the BT postcode area may not arrive on time.

According to Royal Mail, local issues in the Westhill office has resulted in delays to deliveries in the AB13, AB14 and AB32 postcode areas.
