Royal Mail cutting deliveries ‘could kill off handwritten letters’

They have provided dispatches back home from the battlefield, declarations of love, and notes of thanks for Christmas gifts. Yet handwritten letters face a new threat in the internet age — from Royal Mail itself.

The founder of the Handwritten Letter Appreciation Society (HLAS), now in its seventh year, says the proposed reduction of delivery days by the postal service could further deter people from picking up a pen.

“Writing a letter is so much more personal than sending an email or a WhatsApp message,” said Dinah Johnson. “It is something that Royal Mail have never really promoted or valued, despite the fact it is this wonderful thing, an asset, that makes money for them.”
