The postal service faces mounting criticism over failing to meet delivery targets
Royal Mail has announced delivery disruptions affecting postcodes throughout the UK including Leicestershire. The postal service has come under increasing scrutiny for consistently missing its delivery targets.
The announcement follows news of a stamp price increase due next month. Last October, Royal Mail was handed a £21million fine after it failed to meet First and Second Class delivery standards during its previous financial year.
Just 77% of First Class post and 92.5% of Second Class mail arrived on time in its 2024-25 financial year — missing its respective 93% and 98.5% targets.
From April, First Class stamps will cost £1.80 whilst Second Class stamps will rise to 91p. In 2020, a First Class stamp was priced at 76p, with the cost having increased eight times since.
As of Wednesday, March 25, numerous delays are affecting areas across the UK, reports the Express. Royal Mail stated: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week.
“In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.
“In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.”
The company added: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.”
Over the last day, Royal Mail’s air and road operations ran according to plan. However, disruption has been reported at Birmingham and Norwich Mail Centres.
Birmingham Mail Centre confirmed that some post dispatched yesterday from the B, HR and WR postcode districts was out for delivery today to other regions across the UK.
Similarly, Norwich Mail Centre experienced delays with some mail sent from the NR postcode area for delivery today to other parts of the country.
At present, 18 delivery offices are experiencing delays nationwide in locations such as Loughborough, Shepshed and Syston. This has impacted 40 postcode districts.
