Royal Mail has been hit by delivery delays in 73 postcodes just hours before Mother’s Day

Royal Mail is experiencing delivery disruptions across 73 postcodes mere hours ahead of Mother’s Day. The postal service has acknowledged multiple operational difficulties.

A spokesperson explained: “We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors.

“In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive.”

Royal Mail added: “We’re sorry for any inconvenience and thank you for your understanding.” Last autumn, Ofcom imposed a £21m penalty on Royal Mail for failing to meet its yearly delivery objectives. This marked the third occasion the 509 year old postal operator had been sanctioned by the regulator, reports Birmingham Live.

Ofcom has also reduced Royal Mail’s primary delivery requirements as part of modifications to the Universal Service Obligation (USO), meaning that from next month it must only achieve 90% of first-class post within one working day (down from 93%), and 95% of second-class post within three days (down from 98.5%).
