Royal Mail delivery issues in Nuneaton are not down to staff sickness, insider claims

An insider has rejected Royal Mail’s explanation for issues with deliveries in Nuneaton. As we reported in our newsletter, a ‘significant number of constituents’ have complained about not having mail for weeks – or getting it just once a week.

Royal Mail has said that the recent issues with some people not receiving their mail have been down to staff sickness. But an insider has now told CoventryLive that it is due to a lack of staff to deal with even bigger rounds caused by growing development in the area.

They said that this means that some mail ‘sits for days on end’ as there aren’t enough staff to deliver it all at one time. “Royal Mail are not struggling due to sickness,” the insider said.

“They have completely changed the job, removed rounds and not recruited people to cover.

“They have nine plus vacancies but also jobs that are impossible to complete. They also do not rotate rounds, some rounds go out every day while others sit there for days on end.”

What Royal Mail said

CoventryLive put these claims to Royal Mail. A spokesman said: “Over the last 10 years, the number of addresses we deliver to nationally has grown by more than 2 million, and many postmen and women’s routes have not been revised in this time.

“This can mean that some routes can be an hour or two longer than others, for example where new housing developments have been built. Our latest quarterly results show a 25% decline in the volume of letters sent since before the pandemic, during which time the number of parcels has risen. We have therefore revised routes throughout the country to ensure they are fairer and reflect the growth in addresses and parcel deliveries.”
